The Douglas Dolls is a dance team that performs at events within the community, competes in dance competitions and gives back to the community.
With an emphasis on community service, these dancers learn how to give back. Each year they work with the Boys and Girls Club, Douglas Care Center as well as other organizations within the community. This year they will be involved in helping with a canned food drive for Thanksgiving as well as a special Christmas project. There is an annual Easter Basket Drive in April where they teach a free dance camp. All children in the community are invited and asked to donate an Easter basket. These baskets are donated to an organization in need.
All members complete fundraisers to pay for their performance uniforms and competition fees. A sense of hard work and appreciation is established with these girls by having to raise money to do what they love.
This year we are looking for sponsors for additional funds. As a sponsor, your business will be printed on a banner that will be hung at all dance team performances, with the exception of dance competitions. This banner will also be put up at any fundraising events that are not door-to-door sales. Both dance recitals will include your business name in the program as well. Please review the sponsorship form for more information if you are interested.
Keep your eyes open for the Douglas Dolls, the dedication to their craft can surely be seen in their dancing! Performances scheduled for the next year include sports events, Octoberfest, Douglas Care Center, The Boys & Girls Club, Stars of Tomorrow, Jackalope Days, State Fair and much more! So come on down and put your hands together for the Douglas Dolls!
DANCE TEAM PREP CLASS
This year the audition date for the dance teams has been pushed to November. There will be a dance team prep class beginning Thursday, September 9th that will continue up until the November audition date. The prep class will be held on Thursdays from 7:30-8:30pm.
Auditions will take place in November 2010. Location TBA. Participants must be at least 9 years old to audition. During the first hour an advanced Jazz/Hip-Hop Routine will be taught. During the second hour all participants will learn a high kick routine as well as three dance combinations. At 3:00 auditions in small groups will begin. There will a panel of judges that will judge the participants. As the groups audition they will be allowed to leave.
What to Expect During the Audition:
At the audition all potential candidates will learn a dance and perform that dance in front of the judges. Participants must choreograph three eight counts to present in front of the judges. A high kick routine will be learned and performed in front of the judges as well. All participants should be able to do turns, kicks, splits, leaps and basic footwork. Splits are not required.
Since the Douglas Dolls will be involved in community activities and performances representing the town of Douglas overall attitude and personality will be considered as well.
Don't forget to bring your music for eight counts or we will have some at the studio for you to use, and bring a snack and plenty of water.
What the Judges Look For:
Always make sure that you smile. A smile can cover up big mistakes in the routine.
Point your toes while doing any techniques as well as kicks!
Go as low in your splits as possible.
While doing your kicks, keep your legs straight and shoulders back. Height is not important, technique is what we look for.
Keep a good attitude, no matter how frustrated you get. We will only be looking for positive students to be on the dance team.
Practice your turns, leaps, pas de bourre's, chasse's and pivots. Basic technique will be used to go across the floor as well as in the dances.
Prepare three eight counts. If you forget your eight counts while auditioning, keep going! We don't know what your eight counts are.
What to Wear:
Participants are required to wear black jazz pants, black jazz shoes and whatever top you choose. Make sure what you wear makes you stand out!
Notes:
- All participants must have signed permission to audition. Click here for permission form. - If there are scheduling conflicts with soccer games, please notify the studio so that other arrangements can be made.
